Thierry Fournier is an independent artist and curator. His practice mainly deals with questions of otherness, through the relations between human, living and technologies: installations, objects, works on internet, videos, drawings, performances… His curatorial approach transposes these issues into the collective field, exploring in particular the modes of coexistence of works. He is self-taught and trained as an architect (he graduated from the École nationale supérieure d’Architecture de Lyon). His works are regularly exhibited in France and abroad.

Thierry Fournier is also teacher. He is head of The Exercice of the Gaze, the contemporary art workshop at Sciences Po Paris. He created and was co-head of 2 research studios from 2010 to 2020: EnsadLab Displays at Ensad Paris and Collection Artem at Ensa Nancy, dedicated to the research about exhibitions and curating. He was a guest artist-professor at Le Fresnoy, Studio national des arts contemporains in 2018. He is also co-head and artistic director of antiAtlas Journal, a free online art-science journal dedicated to the contemporary stakes and forms of borders.


” I could start by a short description of some of my recent artworks, and particularly about the relationships they propose between human, non-human, and their contexts. An intelligent surveillance camera testifies its inability to understand what it sees (Sightseeing), a grave never finds the right sentence to conclude its epitaph (Ungrave), a talking robotic entity placed in a chapel attempts to describe the space around it (The Probe), an artificial landscape is generated by all the messages posted on Twitter about desire (Ecotone), a smartphone writes poems from the words of its user (Oracles), a voice gives orders to the visitors of an exhibition (‘Set-up’), news reports are turned into disaster movie scripts (Precursion), a GIF questions the human nature of its spectators (Just in Case), etc.

These works all have in common to use the text as a central element, in static or generative forms. They all summon an otherness: some confer a behaviour to a previously inanimated apparatus (Ungrave, The Probe, Sightseeing, Set-up, Just in Case, etc.), some capture live data from the Internet (Ecotone, Precursion) or from our own datas (Oracles). All of them do suggest a fiction, in which these apparatus becomes a kind of organism, endowed with a conscience or a sentience, expressed notably through its language. Their words are very often of a familiar nature, to evoke an everyday subjectivity in which we could recognise our own losses of control: if the machine is more fallible than we are, it could be as human as us.

On several occasions, these works therefore bear witness to what would resemble artificial intelligence. But in reality, it is only the confrontation between a pre-written content and the events that occur live in their own contexts. When the webcam in Sightseeing believes that people are walking on the beach (which happens regularly by chance), or when the screen in Just in Case pretends to calculate whether the person looking at it is human, it is obviously impossible to know whether their behaviour is conditioned or not, thus accrediting the hypothesis of their consciousness. By evoking the otherness that we confer on technical objects, or even some situations of animism, we could rather describe these situations as “artificial otherness”.

Finally, the use of programmes and text in these works reflects my critical stance on the relationship we have with technology. These entities frequently express failures and develop a self-reflection on their limits: the burn-out of the camera in Sightseeing, the alien of The Probe who testifies that he understands nothing, etc. Machines and programs are used here not for what they accomplish, and even less for the dream of an augmentation by technology, but, in an anthropological way, rather to evoke *what we expect* them to tell about us.”
